Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), adult
Miami, FL
December 11, 2017

Although normally not its choice for prey, this Red-tailed Hawk seized this Green Iguana from a Slash Pine for a meal. Not native to South Florida, the iguanas population has steadily increased since they were first observed in South Florida in the 60’s. According to wildlife experts, they have no natural predators, however, this is not the first hawk I have observed preying on the iguanas. Will share that observation in another post.
